Bakewell Ovens is the only supplier world-wide of bakery ovens that use biomass
technology in a unique, integrated design that saves energy, reduces carbon footprints and brings up to 50% savings on gas, oil and electricity. The ovens have integral burners that generate the equivalent kW per hour as any conventional type of burner at a fraction of the cost; cost-effective and smokeless, there is very little waste with the resulting ash being useful as a fertilizer. The wood pellets, which are carbon neutral and produce low CO2 are readily available throughout the UK.
Bakewell’s Peter Jones says: "Our wood pellet fuelled rack oven - the only one in the world - is in great demand and we have recently started a collaboration with the Eco Hephaestus Company in Greece to market our range of wood pellet ovens. Given the current high and rising costs of gas, oil and electricity, interest from the baking industry is growing quickly as more and more bakeries are looking to use renewable energy to save costs and become more energy efficient.â€
One such bakery is the Gloucestershire-based, award winning Authentic Bread Company which has recently installed two Bakewell wood fired rack ovens. Owner, Alan Davis says: “We are an organic bakery and our ethos is to conserve energy wherever we can. Our electricity bills have been huge and always climbing so we were keen to explore the possibility of transferring to biomass fuelled ovens but were concerned that they wouldn’t be feasible due to a lack of control - being able to adjust our ovens is absolutely crucial.â€
Alan heard about Bakewell Ovens and was delighted to find that they work just like normal ovens, heat up quickly and, most importantly, are fully controllable. After seeing one in operation, Alan decided he wanted to go ahead and was able to thanks to an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust and a grant of £17,000 from the South West Rural Development Agency. Very impressed with the results, Alan says: “Our bread and croissants bake much better and beyond what we could expect.â€
There are significant energy efficiency benefits too as Alan explains: "Previously our ovens took two hours to heat up so we kept them running when not in use but now the Bakewell ovens take just 15 minutes from cold to top heat so we can turn them off when we aren’t using them. In addition, large loaves, which used to take 45 minutes to bake, now take 25 minutes. I’m also expecting to see a reduction in the cost of energy to 4p/kW from a previous level of 10p/kW for electricity.â€
Islamic Bakers and Confectioners of Batley, West Yorkshire, producing a wide range of products, have also opted for one of the Bakewell wood pellet fuelled ovens. Partner, Bashir Karolia rates the oven so much he is considering replacing his remaining two ovens – one gas and one electric – with Bakewell ovens this year. Bashir says: “The Bakewell oven is performing well, it heats up more quickly, holds its temperature better and delivers reduced baking times and, at the same time, it is reducing our carbon footprint.â€
